How Can a Pregnancy Exercise Ball Help?

In sooooo many ways. You can use it for what it’s designed for, exercise. I used it while I was pregnant to use as a seat to relieve some pains I was feeling. It can be used during the labor process to help the baby out.

And then when labor and body healing is all done, you can use it for exercise to get back into shape again.

I’m going to go over different ways a pregnancy exercise ball can help, and then at the end, I’ll give you some buying options.

Exercise

A pregnancy exercise ball is the same ball you see at gyms. Many people use them for great workouts.

Since they are already part of normal exercise routines, it’s easy to adapt them to prenatal exercises.

You can find the active wear she is wearing on Amazon.

Sitting

Sitting on an exercise ball at your desk or table can improve body strength and health.

I’ve gone through physical therapy a couple times. They often recommended sitting on a yoga ball at my desk. I never listened. Now that it’s part of my daily routine, I wish I would have started when they told me to.

When I did a search to look up all the benefits of sitting on a yoga ball, I discovered the practice is rather controversial.

I had to look into that since I do sit on one while working. You can read about the pros and cons, or I can give you the shorthand version.

It’s good because you work your core while sitting.

It can be bad if you have bad posture. I have experienced the bad posture myself.

I had a habit of sitting with my legs to the side and twisting my spine towards the table to use my laptop. It was easier to get up from that position but it caused pain. The pain went away when I stopped sitting like that.

One common complaint of sitting on a yoga ball is that people find it uncomfortable. I disagree. I find it extremely comfortable. I don’t know if people are using the wrong size ball, inflating too much, or the desk they sit at is not at the right height for sitting on a yoga ball. There could be many reasons.

Personally, I sit on it all day never feeling uncomfortable.

To get back to the issue of the spine, a common issue is people are used to slouching. So they slouch when sitting on an exercise ball for long periods. Slouching will cause your body to hurt.

I’ve been practicing maintaining good posture since I was a teenager. I’m able to sit without slouching for most of the day. It’s not until the evenings that I find myself wanting to slouch, then I transfer to my couch or a normal chair.

All that said

There can be issues with using a yoga ball as a seat, but it was the only thing that gave me relieve for a tight muscle in my abdomen while I was pregnant. Now, it’s a comfortable seat that works my core.

If you want to use a yoga ball as a seat, it’s important to remember good posture and it takes time. I did not immediately start using it all day. So don’t throw out your normal chair.

It takes time to adjust to working your core muscles constantly. Keep your old chair around and move back to it when the ball becomes uncomfortable or you find it too hard to maintain good posture.

Side Note: One reason I like sitting on the ball all day is because I can be active while I sit. I can grab my table, lift my feet, and start rolling my hips. It’s fun and adds variety to my movements throughout the day.

I wish the audio quality was better, but here are some tips on how to comfortably use a yoga ball as an office chair.

Labor

When used during labor, yoga balls are often called birthing balls. I’m going to leave how to use a birthing ball to an expert. Here’s a video from a labor nurse demonstrating all her favorite positions.

She also goes into how to find the correct sized ball so you don’t hurt yourself.

Techniques for how to use a birthing ball and finding one of the proper size

Many labor rooms have birthing balls already. You can ask your doctor or midwife if they already have some in the labor room.

Post-Labor

I would not recommend sitting on a pregnancy ball while healing from labor.

I waited longer than I needed to to pull it back out, but definitely don’t sit on one while you are recovering.

For post-labor, you can use it for exercise and sitting on again.

One use that has surprised me is that my little one loves to play with it. She can’t even fully crawl yet. She does the army crawl and she pats at the pregnancy ball giggling at it.

Now for the Balls

Now that we’ve gone over the different uses, it’s time to talk about what ones are available.

I’m going to cover three different options.

Baby Bump

  • Price: $44.10
  • Average Customer Rank: 4.6/5
  • Warranty: Yes
  • Come with pump: Yes
  • Where to Buy:  Amazon.com

The unique thing about this ball is that it has legs to keep it stationary when you’re not sitting on it.

The Birth Ball

  • Price: $39.95
  • Average Customer Rank: 4.3/5
  • Warranty: Not Sure
  • Come with pump: Yes
  • Where to Buy:  Amazon.com

Before going into specifics about this product, I’ll address the warranty. They do not outright say whether or not they have a warranty on Amazon. I tried clicking on the link that exists to find out more and they said to check the manufacturer’s web page.

It did not come up on the first page of a google search. The brand is The Birth Ball. So anyone who’s ever written about a birthing ball came up instead.

Do they have a warranty? They might, but you’d have to look really hard to find out about it.

What this ball comes with is non-slip socks, exercise guide book, and a hospital bag.

Trideer

  • Price: $16.99
  • Average Customer Rank: 4.3/5
  • Warranty: 12 months
  • Come with pump: Yes
  • Where to Buy:  Amazon.com

This is the simple version and the brand I have. Just the ball with its pump.

Accessories

If you are going to use your pregnancy exercise ball for exercise, there’s a couple items you’re probably going to want to get with it. These items show up in a lot of exercise videos with yoga balls or yoga in general.

Resistance bands for $22.97.

Yoga block for $6.98.

Yoga Mat for $18.68.

Versatile

Pregnancy exercise balls are very versatile. You can use them for exercise before, during, and after pregnancy. They also come in handy for labor.

Do you have any experience using one of these balls for exercise, normal sitting, or labor? I’d love to hear your input!

I became a mom long ago, and would have loved to have had one of these balls/packages to go through pregnancy and post-labor with!I have used physio balls for exercise and seats for about twenty years. I love them! If I’m truly too tired to exercise I will put on a movie and bounce on the ball throughout. I hang over the ball on my stomach to stretch and relax sore back muscles. I use it for a foot rest too. Easy to roll to wherever I want to sit!Obviously I’m an enthusiast! Using a pump to keep the ball at… Read more »

I never thought to use it to help with pregnancy. My ex used to use one all the time, but this was sometime after we had kids as there was not as much info about all of this stuff years ago when we had our children. Now I will definiely recommend it to our girls when they get ready to have children of thier own. There is so much more information available these days compared to over 17years ago when we had our third and youngest child.

Wow, I had no idea that these exercise/pregnancy balls were so useful! I think I know some people who would really like the Trideer model. Especially since it can be used as an office chair tool.

I had heard that these balls were expensive, but they seem pretty affordable to me from the listings you have here.

I like your points about taking time to use these balls since you have to watch your posture and get used to it. I know for a fact that even changing chairs can be strenuous.

Thanks for the review, this was helpful!

Hi Nicole Stiles,

I have read your informative review about exercise ball product for pregnant woman. I would not really know about this type of exercise ball if I did not read your article. I think it will be helpful for my wife and other family member’s also. I am going to share it with them and going to buy one of those. I have a little bit concern about safety while using this. Do you have any suggestion? Thanks for sharing.

Hi Nicole,

It’s amazing how many different exercises that a pregnant woman can perform the exercise ball. Logicamente always considers an important first consult with your trusted doctor’s opinion professional.Watching the videos is very important the correct posture must respect the mother. Poor posture can cause damage to your body to avoid. Be very careful if it is the first time you use the exercise ball.

Thank you very much for sharing. Regards! Claudio

I have to be the one, who agrees with those some people that find it extremely uncomfortable. I mean, it might just be the fact that I’m not really used to and all I did was I tried a few times, didn’t like it, so I let it go. But I definitely agree on that slouching part. Maybe that’s the reason I found it uncomfortable.

Either way, I loved the tips on using a stability ball as an office chair. We’ll try them out and see if I notice any difference. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Have a Wonderful Day!

Hello
Using the birth ball after baby is born is my favorite.
It’s especially great for sitting down on and bouncing baby to sleep. If baby is fussy and fighting sleep, I recommend using a baby carrier and gently bouncing on the ball until baby is asleep. It’s easy to do while watching TV for some much-needed distraction or company.
